Fall is my favorite time of year! It is also my favorite time to travel. In many cases, it is shoulder season meaning fewer crowds and lower prices. It can also be a little more challenging to pack due to the changing weather. I have put together a guide for you listing what you need to pack for Prague in fall & winter.

First, let’s talk about Prague a little bit. I’m guessing since you are reading this you are already considering visiting Prague. If you are wavering or haven’t made up your mind, let me just say, “GO!” Seriously, it’s Prague! It’s a fairytale city and visiting in the fall or winter just adds something extra to your visit. Now that we have settled that, let’s get to packing.

I’m going to break this guide for what you need for Prague in the fall and winter into sections of what you will need. I won’t get into all of the basics such as undergarments, pajamas, etc. because you already know you need those. At least I hope you do.

How to Pack for Prague

We will start off by briefly discussing the HOW of packing for a trip to Prague in fall and winter. Colder weather means heavier and bulkier clothes. This makes packing a little more challenging and if you are packing in a carryon, it is MUCH more challenging. So, a few of the basics for planning your Prague wardrobe.

Capsule Wardrobe

Hands down, this is the single best tip for packing. Simply put, it ensures that everything you pack will coordinate thus giving you more options while you are traveling. The first thing you want to do is choose a color palate. For our most recent trip, I chose

  • Black
  • White
  • Gray
  • Taupe

This is a typical wardrobe for me, I tend to stick with neutrals. If color is your thing, select one or two and then have a basic neutral color to mix and match with. I would always suggest jeans or black for your bottoms. It will match most everything. Also, you will fit right in with the fashion in Europe.

Try Everything On

I have learned through trial and error on this. I packed items I already owned and assumed that everything would look good together only to get to my destination and not be happy with how an outfit looked. So, lay everything out and try on your outfit combinations together to make sure they still work for you. You don’t want to pack something and then have it not be useful.

What to Pack for Prague

Shoes

The most important item you will pack. An uncomfortable pair of shoes will ruin any trip, especially to Prague; there is a lot of walking. Below I will list the 3 types of shoes I almost always pack for a trip. Keep in mind, I almost always pack in a carryon, so I limit the number of shoes I pack due to bulk and weight.

Boots

A comfortable pair of boots are invaluable for packing for Prague in the fall and winter. Whether you choose an ankle boot or calf boot, make sure they are broken in and ready for walking. Here are couple of boots that are comfortable and stylish, the perfect combination for travel. This pair also has the benefit of being waterproof. This pair from Teva would also be a great choice.

Sneakers

Whether you choose a classic sneaker or an elevated version, no packing list for Europe would be complete without including this versatile shoe. If you are looking for something new to refresh your wardrobe, either of these would work well.

Dress Shoes

Well, maybe not dress shoes, but something to wear in the evening for dinner or a night out. I prefer not to wear heels of any height on cobblestone roads, but that of course is an option if you prefer. This is what I wear. It works well and still allows me to walk around the city in evening.

Outerwear

Coats

Next to shoes, outerwear is the most important item you will pack. You want to make sure you have a coat that will keep you warm enough to be outside during the day and night. It is hard to enjoy yourself, especially at Christmas markets if you are freezing. During the fall, a water-resistant coat with a hood is a good idea. Here is what I wore for the Christmas markets last year as well as an option very similar to what I wore to Prague this year.

Gloves

I packed gloves for our mid-October trip, and I was very glad I did! We had a couple of nights that got down to the low 40’s, which meant chilly evenings and mornings. They are so easy to pack that I recommend taking them if you are visiting in mid-late October and later. This pair or this one would work well.

Scarf

Another item that is a must if you are traveling during the winter and particularly if you are going to the Christmas markets. I wore my scarf every day at the markets. It was particularly helpful when it was a little windy out. It’s also another one of those items that is really easy to pack.

Hat

When packing your outerwear, don’t forget to pack a lightweight hat or beanie. Even with a hood, I wore a hat on many days for an extra layer of warmth. This one is almost exactly like the one I wore throughout Germany and France.

Bottoms

Obviously, you will have a lot of options here. I’m listing what I chose to pack. It did work well for me, and I think I would pack the same way if we made the same trip again. We didn’t attend the opera or any events that required me to pack dress clothes, so that is something that could be different for you.

Jeans

This is one of those, “Duh” items. I packed 2 pair for our trip, both of them were a dark wash and I was pleased with my choice. I’m sure you have your favorite pair of jeans, but if you are in the market for a new pair, this is what I wore.

Leggings

No surprise here. Leggings are comfortable to travel in and very easy to pack. For fall and winter, I would stick with black leggings. Now, we all know the high-end legging brands that are out there (and I own some), but if you are looking for something a little less expensive, check out this brand.

Skirt

A black leather skirt with tights works perfectly for nights out. You will blend right in with the others around you and look like a local in your skirt. I actually had to get one as I didn’t already own one. There are many to choose from and you don’t have to spend a fortune to look stylish.

Tops

Long Sleeve T-shirt

I absolutely LOVE traveling with long sleeve V-neck shirts. This last trip I packed black, gray and white (no surprise). I can switch up the look with a scarf or jewelry. They are also great for layering and under vests, if you would choose to pack one.

Sweaters

Because I pack in carryon only for our trips, I stick with lightweight sweaters and avoid anything too bulky. Obviously, if you have checked luggage, you could pack something a little heavier. Just make sure whatever you pack works with your capsule wardrobe.

Conclusion

I hope this guide for what to pack for Prague in the fall and winter is helpful. Prague is truly a magical place and visiting in the fall or winter adds something extra to experience. You can’t go wrong with either season. Better yet, visit during both!
