Twinkling lights in trees, Christmas music playing in the background, families bundled up drinking warm beverages. You have a glimpse of a European Christmas market. Dating back hundreds of years, Christmas markets are a celebrated tradition during the yuletide season. While there is much debate on who has the best Christmas market, I believe Cologne, Germany has to be at the top of the list. After reading this, you will see why Cologne may be the best Christmas market.

2023 dates are set for the Cologne Christmas markets. You can enjoy shopping and Glühwein from November 23rd- December 23rd, with the exception of Heinzels Winter Fairytale which will run from November 23rd- January 24th, 2024.

A Little Bit of History

Christkindlmarkt is a street market celebrated during the 4 weeks of advent and originated in Germany. Dating back to 1434, the first true Christmas market was held in Germany and has become a seasonal tradition. Although there have been changes to the markets throughout the years, many basic elements have remained. As you walk through a maze of delightfully decorated stalls, you will still find food and drink offerings, handmade gifts and local foods for sale.

One City, Many Markets

Cologne, like other large cities throughout Europe, has multiple themed markets spread out across the city. Each market has its own unique feel yet maintains a continuous, joyful environment that envelops you as you wander through each one.

7 Markets-Unlimited Joy

Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market

Weihnactsmarkt Am Dom sits in the shadows of the iconic and imposing Cologne Cathedral. Due to its impressive setting, it is probably the best-known market in Cologne. In my opinion, this isn’t the best market in the city, and I suggest visiting this one first and then moving on to the others.

By night, it does have a beautiful canopy of twinkling lights that stretches over many of the stalls and walkways creating a memorable scene. Photographers will love the picture the lights create juxtaposed with the massive cathedral looming above. Start here, wander the stalls, take some pictures and move on to the next market.

Heinzels Wintermarchen

One glimpse of this whimsical market and you immediately know that Cologne takes Christmas markets seriously. As you walk under the arch into this special market, you will see the legendary Heinzelmannchen, house elves who tend to the local’s housework while they slept. Gaze upon the elaborately decorated fairytale chalets, complete with the house elves peeking out.

Continue strolling down the long corridor of stalls under white lights that gleam like stars on a clear night. When you think this market couldn’t be any more whimsical, you stumble upon a skating rink with a ski lift carrying the elves back and forth. With so much detail, you will not want to rush through this market. It is best enjoyed at a lingering pace with a Glühwein in one hand and one of the delectable food options in the other. The Glühwein mugs are adorable and would make a great addition to your collection. I smile every time I see mine.

Angel’s Christmas Market

To find this market, look for the shimmering stars in the trees to guide your way. Blanketed in white, silver and gold, this dreamy setting is best experienced after dark. The romantic feel of this market is enhanced by performers dressed as angels with some on stilts. The rustic chalets offer a unique selection of handmade Christmas decorations and gifts.

After all the walking, you may be needing a break. Fortunately, there is a lively wine bar perfect for resting your weary feet while still enjoying the happy, bustling scene in front of you. The mugs are heavenly in shades of white and blue. Make sure to try the cathedral shaped waffles to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Nicholas Village

Just when I think I have seen my favorite market, we come across Nicholas village. Located in Rudolphplatz. A huge bonus, it is convenient to public transportation.

Here you will find quintessential Christmas with half-timbered wooden chalets decorated in vibrant reds and greens, complete with reindeer decorations.

Stepping through the entrance to this traditional Christmas village brings back memories of Christmases past. Childrens faces will light up as scenes of Christmas appear before them. Make sure to check out the children’s program organized by local artists.

Heavenvue Cologne

If glitter, dazzling LED lights and large shiny baubles are what make you smile, Heavenvue might be the market for you. Proudly billed as the gay Christmas market, you will find more music and adult beverages and fewer food and gift stalls. Food trucks are available with a variety of food options. Save this market for later in the evening to take advantage of the music and party vibe.

Staatgarten Christmas Market

Another unique market, this one appealing to the locals. Located in a city park, Staatgarten is known for its artesian gifts and products. This smaller market is an excellent choice for selecting that perfect gift for the people on your list.

Due to its popularity with locals, this market can get quite busy in the evening after work. To avoid crowds, visit earlier in the day.

Cologne Harbour-Riverside Market

The Rhine River makes for a unique and beautiful backdrop for this market and the nautical theme adds to the fun. It is smaller than the other markets and sometimes gets overlooked, but Harbour market is worth adding to your list.

An added bonus for this market is it will be a New Years market from December 26th, 2023- January 7th, 2024. A little more holiday cheer is always a good thing!

Conclusion

As we wrap up our time in Cologne, there is some information to keep in mind.

  • As a rule of thumb, the market begins the third week of November and ends around December 22nd.
  • Cologne is a good home base for visiting other Christmas markets and has excellent train service.
  • Glühwein is the traditional Christmas market drink, which is a mulled wine normally made of red wine. Each market has its own unique mug that you can buy for around 2-3 Euros. It’s a great, inexpensive souvenir. You can always choose not to buy the mug. *There are always nonalcoholic options, too.

Make sure to try a variety of traditional market foods. Some of the most popular and common are:

  • Kartoffelpuffer– potato pancakes with applesauce
  • Candied almonds
  • Bratwurst and currywurst
  • Flammelkueche– delicate flatbread pizza
  • Raclette– warm, melted cheese perfect for dipping
  • Marzipan
  • Schupfnudel– a lovely light noodle similar to gnocchi

Take your time and don’t rush through the markets. Enjoy the lights, decorations, festive food and drinks.

Make this German Christmas tradition part of your Christmas celebration and decide for yourself if Cologne is worthy of the top spot.

If you are able to take some extra time to visit additional markets, I highly recommend it! I would also suggest packing in a carry on for your travels. It makes getting around so much easier. I have a guide on how to pack for the Christmas markets in just a carry on you can read here.
