Everyone has a bucket list with their list of places to go and things to do. You will see, Jekyll Island is a destination that you need to add to your bucket list.

Southern charm and hospitality await you on this barrier island off the coast of Georgia. While the island might be smaller in size, it more than makes up for it with outdoor activities, natural beauty and tranquil spots for relaxation.

What Makes Jekyll Island Special

The island has a storied past dating back 3500 years, so colonial history enthusiasts will enjoy learning about the founding of Jekyll Island in 1733. Furthermore, you will learn of the ties between Fort Frederica on St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island.

Jekyll Island was purchased in 1886 by a group of wealthy families to be used as a private retreat. With this purpose in mind, The Jekyll Island Club was developed as a winter getaway for a select group of people including the Rockefellers. The Island Club closed in 1942 but has since reopened when the state bought Jekyll Island in 1947. Today, the Jekyll Island Club Resort is the premier place to stay when visiting.

Nature lovers will appreciate that development on the island is limited to 1609 acres to preserve the ecosystem of the barrier island. Due to much of the island being protected, there is an abundance of nature and wildlife to explore.
