Chris and I visited Charleston as part of a historical road trip down the Atlantic Coast. You will find that several of the things not to miss are historical sites.

If you are interested in taking a road trip through some of the Mid-Atlantic states, check out this post on Colonial Williamsburg to add to your list.

Now, let’s take a look at the things to see while in Charleston.

Historical Sites

Because Charleston is a port city, there are a lot of historical events that happened here and as a result, there are still many sites to see and learn from.

Fort Sumter National Monument

Visit where the Civil War began. The first clash between the union and confederate took place here on April 12, 1861, and you can learn all about it during your visit. In addition to self-guided exploration of the fort, there are park rangers who will explain the role of the fort during the war. Because of the location of Fort Sumter, it is only accessible by ferry.

Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon

Also known as the Customs House, the Exchange was completed in 1771. Most notably, it was used to jail prisoners during the American Revolution. Although, it was also used for other purposes. The United States constitution was ratified in this building in 1778 and it was the site of many events during George Washington’s weeklong stay in Charleston.

Charles Towne Landing

The landing spot of English settlers in 1670 establishing the first Carolina colony. There are hands on exhibits and an audio tour for the self-guided historical trail. Additionally, there are 80 acres of gardens to explore as well as a 17th century replica sailing ship, The Adventure.

The Adventure

Magnolia Cemetery

This cemetery is on the National Registry of Historic Places. It is the resting place of six Civil War generals, soldiers, sailors and governors. While walking through a cemetery might not be the first thing you think about doing while on vacation, this is an interesting place to learn about the people who lived in Charleston.

Plantations

Whenever planning a trip to Charleston, local plantations are always at the top of the list of things to do. There are many plantations and historic homes to tour, therefore, you will have to choose which ones to visit.

Middleton Place

This National Historic landmark was built in 1741 and its grounds encompass 110 acres. Consequently, it is the oldest landscaped garden in America. The past becomes real as you learn about the Middleton family, including two founding fathers and the lives of all of those who worked there.

Nathaniel Russell House

The 3-story free flying staircase gives visitors a glimpse into the architectural design of the house from the moment you walk in. Built in 1808, this home has been beautifully restored to its original grandeur. In depth stories about the lives of the Nathaniel Russell family and those who worked to make this lifestyle possible will give you a better understanding of life in the late colonial and early federal period.

Heyward-Washington House

This Georgian style double house was the home of Thomas Heyward Jr. Heyward was one of the four South Carolina signers of the Declaration of Independence. Notably, George Washington stayed here during his weeklong visit to Charleston. Chris and I chose to visit this home because of Washington’s visit. The tour is worthwhile and allows the visitor to see most of the house while giving good insight to the lives of the people who lived there.

Outdoor Strolls

Charleston is perfect for simply walking around and admiring the beauty. A few of the things to do while there are easily seen while strolling through town.

Joe Riley Waterfront Park

8 Acres of waterfront park, which is home to the iconic pineapple fountain. Taking a stroll along the tree lined streets is a great way to escape the hustle of the downtown business district.

Rainbow Row

Another iconic stop on the things to do in Charleston list. Brightly colored houses with southern flair line the street. It’s a quick stop, but a must see when in Charleston.

Charleston City Market

Southern style meets low country culture. Local artists and food vendors sell their products in this covered city market. The market spans several blocks and offers something for everyone. Make sure to check out the locally made sweetgrass basket.
